From pioneering to a higher plan: narrowcasting at Bavaria

Regarding a brewery that exists already since 1917, you would sooner think about history and old-fashioned ways of working rather than innovation. And yet, Bavaria is a company that is constantly busy with developments. Here too, narrowcasting plays a role: no wonder the company was already leading the way five years ago. But now, after the pioneering stage, the time has come to raise their solutions to a much higher level.

Upon entering the impressive office of Bavaria in Lieshout, the digital displays don’t really standout right away. That is because most screens are situated in the distribution centre of the company. Boudewijn Swinkels, workplace manager of Bavaria: “We started with 3 screens and now we have a total of 14 screens, on which we primarily communicate with our employees. We use the screens just as much for general company information as for information about specific departments.”

TV commercials

“When we acquired narrowcasting, we were looking for an internal communication means that could be used everywhere, and one on which movies could be displayed easily”, Swinkels adds. “One of the applications for which we use narrowcasting, is in fact for showing the newest TV commercials of Bavaria to our employees.”

Besides that, narrowcasting solutions are used, inter alia, for creating the awareness of energy use within the company, and for motivating and stimulating employees. Boudewijn Swinkels: “We have developed an app ourselves for the system, with which energy use of the company can be mapped. The app shows how many houses could live on the energy that Bavaria consumes. This helps becoming more aware, and it also fits perfectly with CRS-policy of Bavaria.”

Production figures

“Via narrowcasting, it is also possible to see, inter alia, how effective our various production is on a given day”, Swinkels continues. “With that, the employees can see themselves how their production had been running, and generally they find it all very interesting. Upon that, it results in a kind of ‘competition’ in a playful way at the working place, and it stimulates the employees to do their best every day in keeping the production running as effectively as possible.”

But also anniversaries, birthdays, and other internal affairs that are worth knowing about, can be seen on the screens. Boudewijn Swinkels: “When we first started using narrowcasting, RoomGuide had not yet been developed. We have a lot of meeting rooms here, so I wanted to find a way of displaying which space was occupied at which moment. Together with LeftClick, I developed a program that displayed this information on the large screen in the general space.”

Leading the way

According to Boudewijn Swinkels, that is exactly the strength of LeftClick: the way in which the company continues to innovate together with its clients. “LeftClick is leading the way in this field” he said. “And they are open to new ideas. When we wish for something, they make sure that we get it. The interface is very user-friendly, just as much for the end-users as for the operators.”

Now that Bavaria is already working since around five years with narrowcasting, it is indeed time for new developments in that field. Boudewijn Swinkels: “For the Beer Tour, which is given here at Bavaria, I am looking for new solutions in the field of narrowcasting. Communications with LeftClick regarding that are very pleasant: they think along with us and we feel rather close. When there is something the matter, they are available directly, and I get the answer right away, which is really nice.”

YouTube

“I particularly like the link with YouTube. Presently I have to follow a relatively complicated route to download movies, and then put them into the system in the right version and the right format. But with this link, I only have to upload the movies to YouTube, and they are automatically displayed on the screen. Perfect.”
